Top US Commander lauds Iraqi operations in Basra
Politics    4/2/2008 11:34:00 PM

WASHINGTON, APR 2 (KUNA) -- Top US military Commander on Tuesday lauded on Wednesday the Iraqi operation in Basra.
"I think it was very positive that the leader of a sovereign nation decided to make a move which was focused on providing for his own security, the security of his people", said Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen in a Department of Defense (Pentagon) briefing.
"We have been looking forward to a time when the Iraqi security forces would in fact take the lead and be aggressive in terms of providing for their own security", he added.
Mullen said that the "strategic intent" of the Basra operation was instigated by the Iraqi government but the US army did provide logistics and air support.
"There were some Iraqi security forces who performed incredibly well, and there were others who were challenged", he added.
The Top US Commander said the operation is still ongoing but fighting "significantly reduced" in the last days and noted that this was mainly due to the truce declared by Shitte leader Muqtada al-Sadr, and declined to speculate who is the winner between the Iraqi government and al-Mahdi army.
He also said he has no "independent confirmation" that Iranians helped brokering the cease of fire in Basra.
"I can tell you that both broadly and specifically the Iranian involvement, particularly in that part of Iraq, has still not been very helpful", said Mullen.
He also asserted that the turn of events in Basra means that on the long run in Iraq "political resolution rather than a military resolution" will take place.
Mullen said there is no request yet to send additional US forces to Basra, in particular after British forces declared the halt of its withdrawal from the area. (end) jm.bs KUNA 022334 Apr 08NNNN
