New operation against Al-Qaeda by 26,000 US, Iraqi soldiers

BAGHDAD, Sept 6 (KUNA) -- The US army said its forces along with Iraqi forces intensified military operations against Al-Qaeda in northern Iraq.
A press release by the multinational forces said the coalition forces launched a new operation Wednesday evening against Al-Qaeda.
Around 14,000 Iraqi troops took part in the operation with more than 12,000 US soldiers, the statement added.
This operation comes after a series of attacks carried out by joint forces to prevent Al-Qaeda from reaching a safe haven in the governorates of Salah Ad-Din, Nineveh, Diyala, and Kirkuk from August 13 to September 1.
The overall security situation has improved since the execution of a plan to enforce the law followed by military operations in Diyala and the northern belts.
Today's operation is considered the largest operation carried out in Diyala, which also included Nineveh, located near the Syrian borders which in turn lately witnessed intense terrorist attacks which killed around 500 people.
