Deep concern in Israel after Palestinians destroy Merkava Mk4 tank
Military and Security    6/28/2007 11:31:00 PM

GAZA, June 28 (KUNA) -- Deep concern prevailed in Israeli security agencies Thursday after Palestinian militants used an anti-tank rocket to hit a Merkava Mk4 tank and destroyed the vehicle slightly injuring two of its crew.
The incident took place during Wednesday's Israeli incursion in Gaza as Israeli forces came under Palestinian fire with thousands of RPG rockets launched against them without causing any damage except in three cases, the Maariv daily quoted an Israeli army source as saying.
One Merkava Mk4 tank, which is highly immune to such attacks, was hit by three RPG rockets, the source said. Two members of the tank crew were slightly injured and made it to safety after they were rescued from the operation, the source added.
The Israeli army has been implementing, in the past year, the lessons it learned from last year's war with Lebanon, the source said.
It added that the other side, meaning the Palestinians, have done the same thing and have been preparing themselves to war by equipping themselves with thousands of sophisticated anti-tank rockets, the source added. (end) zt.eh KUNA 282331 Jun 07NNNN
