NIIGATA, JAPAN, May 15 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti student Talal Al-Suaidan is among
participants from 50 nations worldwide who have broken the Guinness World
Record for the "Most Nationalities in a Sauna."
Al-Suaidan and his classmates at International University of Japan (IUJ) in
Niigata Prefecture made history by cramming into the sauna for five minutes in
the city of Nagaoka, about 200 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. A loud countdown from both inside and outside the Sauna began and ended in
cheers of victory in the Monday morning when the group beat the previous
record set by participants from 38 countries in 2004, also in Japan.
Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Al-Suaidan said, "I am very glad to
be part of history. This moment was very unique and special to me, which I
will remember for a long time." Along with some 300 students from 50
countries, Al-Suaidan is working toward MBA at IUJ, which is ranked as a top
business school in Asia. The room called Stadium Sauna, which they shared together in an attempt to
break the world record, has a maximum seating capacity for only 25 people,
according to a bathhouse Yuraiya.
In keeping with Guinness rules, Ichiro Iguchi, Mayor of Minami Uonuma City,
and Shigeru Tsuchida, Minami Uonuma Promotion Bureau Chief from the
prefectural government, attended the event as official witnesses.
After being introduced to large cheers from the students, each witness was
handed a clipboard of names in alphabetical order by country. The witnesses
verified passports and watched each sauna challenger sign in. Country by
country from Argentina to Zambia, the students passed by the IUJ official
cameraman for the event, stating their nationality and name.
As the five minutes crept by, the sounds from inside the sauna grew more
and more joyous, but having a wonderful time, the students stayed inside the
sauna for six minutes and 40 seconds.
Finally, they emerged, one by one, and again spoke their nationality and
name into the camera to verify each of the 50 nationalities were in the Sauna. "The challenge was made in celebration of IUJ's 25th anniversary," said
Gretchen Shinoda, Director of Alumni Relations and Career Counseling and
Services, adding that a small group of students came up with the idea of this
historic event.
"The serious graduate students showed their school spirit as they
represented their homelands well and took on a fun challenge to help IUJ
celebrate 25 years of international education," she added. The evidence, including witness statements and a video of the event, has to
be submitted to Guinness for listing it as a record-breaking number. (end)
