Iraqi parliament votes against cement security walls

BAGHDAD, May 12 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi parliament voted Saturday against constructing cement security walls around residential areas of the capital, Baghdad.
Out of a total of 138 MPs, the 88 present voted unanimously against the construction of such walls and demanded the removal of the temporary walls placed around Adhamiya District that had cause much uproar.
US forces had set up a cement wall around Adhamiya in April to prevent booby-trapped car attacks targeting civilians, and controversy in media compelled Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to change the nature of these walls from permanent to temporary.
Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Meshhadani said this decision was regarding all walls and not just those around Adhamiya, while MP Hadi Al-Amri preferred to wait until such a time that the opinion of Maliki and his ministers on this issue could be heard. (end) ahh.ema KUNA 121504 May 07NNNN
