Egypt hails UN Human Rights Council resolution - Abul-Gheit
Religion    3/31/2007 11:41:00 PM

Egypt hails UN Human Rights Council resolution - Abul-Gheit CAIRO, March 31 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit hailed Saturday the resolution of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) condemning attempts to link terrorism to Islam and all attempts to defame religions.
The resolution calls on all countries to work against forms of infringement on religions and religious icons.
However, European members of the HRC and Canada voted against the draft resolution tabled by the Islamic group to the Geneva-based council.
Abul-Gheit condemned the position of the European countries and Canada as "inconsistent with their claims on supporting human rights and freedom of belief." "Through voting against the draft resolution, the Europeans and Canada proved their double-standards in dealing with the human rights issue, the minister pointed out.
Recent years have seen practices defamatory to religions that necessitate urgent moves by the international community against such practices," he added.
"Continuation of the anti-religion practices serve the interests of those who encourage the premise of clash of civilizations and an Eat-West standoff," Abul-Gheit warned. (end) bna.gb.
