KUN0031 4 GEN 0202 FRANCE /AFP -ABX0 REL-GERMANY-ISLAM-CDU Muslim community rages over CDU Secretary General remarks BERLIN, Oct 2 (KUNA) -- Remarks by Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Ronald Pofalla linking Islam to extremism have brought on censure from main political parties in Germany in addition to the Muslim community. The politician had told the Sunday weekly Bild am Sonntag that Islam was a main factor behind extremism which is based on religious grounds. In reaction to the statements, Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Hubertus Heil told the center-left daily Berliner Zeitung that "Pofalla's remarks could not be considered a positive contribution to the dialogue between cultures that was initiated in Berlin last Wednesday at the 'Islam Conference'." Heil stressed Pofalla's provocative and acid remarks would actually impede dialogue and efforts at mutual understanding. He also pointed out, however, that the SPD does not condone an Islamist trend that condones violence. The official cautioned against the detrimental effect of putting all Muslims in one pot, so to speak. He stressed the majority of the Muslims living in Germany are peaceful people.(end) sh.wsa KUNA 021316 Oct 06NNNN
