KUWAIT, March 27 (KUNA) -- 1965 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued Law 11/1965 making education mandatory in Kuwait.
1966 -- Kuwait Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Union was proclaimed, after two years of establishment.
1968 -- Kuwait and the Soviet Union signed a a cultural cooperation agreement. The accord was the first of its kind to be inked between the two countries.
1971 -- The first Kuwaiti movie, "Bas Ya Bahar" (Enough, O Sea), was screened at Al-Andalus Cinema, illustrating life in Kuwait prior to oil discovery.
1974 -- The Kuwaiti Farmers Association was established with aim of promoting national agriculture, in cooperate with relevant authorities.
1989 -- Kuwait's first theater festival kicked off, coinciding with the World Theatre Day.
2000 -- The Municipal Council closed down the oyster market, banning its trade in the country, on basis of a religious fatwa (edict).
2001 -- The National Assembly approved a bill organizing direct foreign investment in Kuwait.
2002 -- Kuwaiti diplomacy marked a successful triumph when it clinched a pledge from the regime in Baghdad not to repeat its aggression on the State of Kuwait. The Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein made the pledge during the 14th Arab Summit in Beirut.
2002 -- The UN Regional (North Africa and the Middle East) Bureau for combating narcotics and crime prevention selected Sheikha Hessa Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah as Arab Woman Personality for the year 2001.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued Decree 3/2006 on the press and publications law. The first article guarantees freedom of press and print, while prohibiting blasphemy and speaking against Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and his family members. It also allows establishment of new newspapers and printing houses with licensing from the Information Ministry provided that the individual or company has a capital of KD 250,000.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued Decree 5/2006 endorsing the UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, which Kuwait signed on December 12, 2000.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir issued Decree 8/2006 to establish a UN bureau in Kuwait to present aid to Iraq, as agreed upon between Kuwait and the UN.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir issued Decree 9/2006 endorsing Kuwait's membership in the Convention on Nuclear Safety, declared in Vienna on September 20, 1994.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir issued Decree 12/2006 endorsing Kuwait's membership in the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, which Kuwait signed on September 18, 1998.
2006 -- His Highness the Amir issued Decree 13/2006 endorsing the statute of the GCC Standardization Authority, approved during the 24th GCC Summit hosted by Kuwait in December 2003.
2006 -- Khalid Al-Nafisi, a pioneer of the Kuwaiti theatrical movement and a renowned television actor, passed away at the age of 69.
2008 -- Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) launched its "Bahith II" vessel, marking the beginning of a survey of fish resources in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, within the framework of a study on the marine environment.
2008 -- Minister of Information Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah issued a ministerial order prohibiting all media outlets from broadcasting or publishing advertisements calling for primary elections among tribes, which are against the law.
2012 -- Kuwait and Macedonia signed double-taxation evasion accord, complementary to a previous accord aimed at boosting and protecting mutual investments.
