KUWAIT, June 26 (KUNA) -- 1961 -- Kuwait joined the Arab Postal Union.
1961 -- Iraqi Foreign Ministry, in a memo addressed to Arab embassies, claimed, "Kuwait is part of Iraq, a reality that has been endorsed by history and colonial powers will not be able to erase this fact," affirming Baghdad's criminal schemes against the Gulf country.
1961 -- Kuwaiti people staged mass demonstrations protesting remarks by the Iraqi ruler, Abdul Karim Kassem, demanding merger of Kuwait. The chief of police and public security, Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, issued a statement praising the Kuwaiti people for expressing their faithfulness to HH the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. He urged the citizens to resume their regular works after the demonstrations.
1961 -- Saudi King Saud bin Abdulaziz dispatched military forces to Kuwait, in line with the 1948 joint defense treaty, to help in defending the country after the ruling regime in Iraq massed up troops along the border and demanded integration of Kuwait.
2000 -- The National Assembly (parliament) passed a draft law authorizing establishment of private universities, stipulating gender separation, abidance by Islamic and moralistic values.
2000 -- The National Assembly passed a bill resolving state-owned property claims.
2004 -- A gas turbine power plant was opened in south Kuwait with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
2005 -- Law No 30 for 2005 as for social security was put into effect.
2007 -- Kuwaiti media leader Yaqoub Al-Rasheed died at 79. He was a prominent personality in the press, literature and diplomacy. He had served in Kuwait Radio, daily newspapers and composed literary works.
2010 -- Athlete Fawzi Dahash came first in the 110 meters hurdles race at an international athletics competition, held in Bulgaria.
2011 -- Kuwait Oil Company won the international safety award.
2011 -- Abdul Wahab Al-Issa won the national jet ski championship.
2014 -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed with Tunisia a loan agreement worth KD 8.5 million and another one, worth KD six million, with the Lebanese government to finance a water project.
2014 -- Kuwait Petroleum International won the golden award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) in the realm of health, safety and environment. (end) gta
