KUWAIT, April 19 (KUNA) -- 1961 -- A meeting to negotiate the cancellation of the 1899 treaty with Britain was held between late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem, British political residency in the Arabian Gulf Sir William Los and political agent in Kuwait Sir John Richmond at Sief Palace.
1964 -- The 'popular theater' officially launched. It was established in the 1950s by Mohammad Al-Nashmi.
1964 -- Kuwait Graduate Society was launched.
1969 -- Late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issues decree approving Kuwait joining The Hague's 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict treaty to protect artifacts at times of armed conflict.
1971 -- Amending Article 35 of the Press and Publications Law to "shutting down a newspaper and cancelling its permit is prohibited unless a final decision by the criminal court is made and the closure must not surpass a year's period." 1973 -- An Iraqi delegation, led by foreign minister Murtadha Abdulbaqi visits the country to discuss the borders' issue after Iraqi troops occupied Kuwaiti As-Samtah border control center.
1994 -- Minister of communications and minister of electricity and water Jassem AL-Oun inaugurates the duty free zone at Kuwait International Airport.
1998 -- Cabinet approves the establishment of the faculty for social sciences at Kuwait University.
1998 -- Kuwaiti engineer Ali Al-Turki wins a patent from a renowned agency in the United States for his innovative light platform design.
2012 -- With a majority of 26 votes, the National Assembly approves a bill allowing women to participate in Municipal Council elections. (end) hb
