KUWAIT, May 4 (KUNA) -- 1951 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah orders implementation of Islamic Sharia (law) pertaining to endowments.
1953 -- Iraq's King Faisal II visits Kuwait for the first time, accompanied by Prince Abdullah, the Crown Prince, Minister of Defense Nouri Al-Saeed, in response to an invitation from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.
1972 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issues Law number 15/1972, establishing Kuwait Municipality.
1988 -- A group of terrorists hijack Kuwait Airway's Al-Jabriya plane, en route from Bangkok to Kuwait. The hijackers landed the plane at Mashhad Airport in Iran, then at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus, and finally at Houari Boumedienne Airport in Algeria. Two Kuwaitis were killed during the 16-day saga.
1994 -- Kuwait establishes diplomatic relations with the Republic of Lithuania.
1999 -- His Highness the Amir issues a decree to disband the parliament, elected in October 1996, chaired by Ahmad Al-Saadoun.
2000 -- A surgical team from Hussein Makki Juma Cancer Center succeedes in conducting a bone marrow transplant operation for a 48-year old Saudi patient.
2001 -- Kuwaiti National Swimming Team wins first GCC tournament for long distance, held in Oman.
2001 -- Kuwaiti actress Suad Abdullah named UNICEF ambassador, the first woman in the Gulf Cooperation Council to get the honor.
2010 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issues decree to set up embassies in Portugal, Djibouti, and Slovakia.
2010 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah tours European states, with stopovers in Germany, Italy, and the Vatican. During the tour, many agreements were signed for cooperation in the fields of oil, trade, environment and media. (end) hb
