KUWAIT, Nov 1 (KUNA) -- 1953 -- The Department of Education opened a school for the Kuwaiti and Arab communities in Karachi.
1955 -- The first edition of the weekly "Akhbar Al-Usboo'a" (Weekly News) newspaper hit the stands. The newspaper circulation ended on March 27, 1956.
1975 -- Kuwait's First Arab Book Fair was inaugurated at Kuwait University's Science College Hall. Participants included the Arab League, several universities, and 15 Arab states represented by 86 publishing houses.
1981 -- The first edition of the "Al-Thaqafa Al-Alamiya" (International Culture) magazine was published by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters.
1990 -- The State of Kuwait issued the first edition of the newspaper, "Sawt Al-Kuwait" (Voice of Kuwait), from Britain during the Iraqi occupation of the country.
1991 -- Al-Babtain Burns and Plastic Surgery Center was inaugurated, making it the first such specialized center in the Middle East.
1995 -- The first edition of the Kuwaiti magazine, "Al-Zaman" (Time), was issued.
2000 -- Kuwait sees its first monthly magazine on the internet, "Bila Quyood" (Without Restrictions) by Basel Al-Jasser.
2001 -- A new traffic law with strict penalties became effective. It targeted driving under influence of alcohol, crossing the red light, racing on public streets and driving in the opposite direction of traffic.
2007 -- Kuwait's National Shooting Team won the gold medal in skeet shooting at the Asian Shooting Championship held in the Philippines.
2008 -- Ambassador Ghassan Al-Duwaisan presented his credentials to the Sultan of Brunei to become Kuwait's first ambassador to the Asian country.
2008 -- Kuwait's Yousef Al-Askari won the gold medal for the 400 free stroke swimming competition for the 13-14 age group, at the International Swimming Championship held in Brazil. The swimmer records 4.16 minutes. (end) gta
