CAIRO, July 17 (KUNA) -- Any solution to the Yemeni conflict should be political and adhere to the Gulf initiative as well as the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216, the Arab League's top official said on Monday.
The Arab League's Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit said that the principles imbedded in "the Gulf initiative, National Dialogue Conference and UN Resolution 2216 can provide a sustainable solution to the conflict in Yemen," read a statement by the Arab League.
In a meeting with the UN's Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Abul-Gheit underscored dismal humanitarian conditions in the war-torn nation, amid a cholera outbreak that has spiraled out of control.
The Arab League's Secretary General commended the UN Special Envoy for Yemen's efforts to "prevent further violence" in the impoverished nation.
Elsewhere, addressing an assembly of permanent representatives to the Arab League, including Kuwait's envoy to the regional bloc Ahmad Al-Bakr, Ould Cheikh Ahmed offered an explanation over the latest developments in Yemen. (end) mfm.nam
