RAMALLAH, May 22 (KUNA) -- The Palestinian territories on Monday witnessed an all-out strike in which shops, official and private institutions and transportation were halted as the detainees held by Israel were continuing their hunger strike for the 36th day in protest against the conditions of their detention.
The strike, which took place in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the occupied territories in 1948, comes in response to the call made by the National Committee for the Release of Prisoners in Israeli Occupation Prisons, which includes various life facilities except health services.
"All life facilities have been committed to the all-out-strike today in the various Palestinian areas," said the head of the media committee for the prisoners' strike Abdulfattah Dowla.
He told KUNA that this proves that the Palestinian people are united behind the prisoners in Israeli jails while they are fighting the battle of freedom and dignity.
This is the second time that the Palestinian territories have witnessed a comprehensive strike since the first intifada in 1987. The first time was last April 27, with the strike entering its eleventh day.
Public transport is due to resume its work mid-day to transport citizens to the solidarity sit-in tents set up in the cities.(end).
