NEW YORK, Feb 17 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the terrorist attack in the South of Baghdad of which the so-called Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility.
Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary General Farhan Haq told the press this week has seen a series of such atrocious crimes in the Iraqi capital, therefore, "we express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Iraq." The UN conveyed their solidarity to the people of Iraq in resisting attempts to spread fear, intimidation and hatred.
Haq said the World's top body will continue to stand by the Government and people of Iraq in their efforts to fight terrorism and violent extremism, notably by building trust and mutual understanding through peaceful and inclusive dialogue.
The attack was reported to be a car which was parked on the side of a road and exploded nearby car sale exhibitions. The blast resulted in the death of more than 50, and wounded 49 others. (end) mao.bs
