NEW YORK, April 1 (KUNA) -- The UN Security Council renewed measures against illicit oil exports from Libya, and granted mandate tension for Experts Panel assisting sanctions committee.
Unanimously voting in favor of resolution 2278, the UNSC extended measures requiring a vesselآ’s flag State to take the necessary measures to prevent ships from loading, transporting or discharging crude oil from Libya.
The resolution also requires member states to prevent vessels carrying Libyan crude from entering their ports, and to prevent their nationals, entities or individuals on their territory from engaging in any financial transactions with respect to such crude oil.
Extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts until July 31, 2017, the UK drafted resolution requested that the Government of National Accord confirm to the Committee as soon as it exercised sole and effective oversight over the National Oil Corporation, the Central Bank of Libya and the Libyan Investment Authority.
Further, the resolution urged the member states "to assist the Government of National Accord, upon its request, by providing it with the necessary security and capacity building assistance," in response to threats to Libyan security and in defeating the so called Islamic State (IS), groups that have pledged allegiance to IS, Ansar AI-Sharia, and other factions associated with Al-Qaeda operating in Libya.
On the matter of stability in Libya, the UN Secretary General issued earlier a statement welcoming the arrival of the Libyan Presidency Council in Tripoli, describing it as "an important step in the implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement." The UN chief called on all actors to respect the aspirations of the overwhelming majority of the Libyan people for peace, stability and prosperity. He also urged in his statement all political actors and public institutions to facilitate an immediate and peaceful handover of power.
He reminded all security actors of their responsibility to ensure safety and security of the Presidency Council and urged them to refrain from any action that could undermine their work.(end) mao.rk
