WASHINGTON, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- US Special Envoy for Syria Michael Ratney visited Moscow, Russia on Friday for consultations with Russian officials on the conflict in Syria, the State Department revealed.
"The United States remains strongly committed to achieving a genuine, negotiated political transition away from Bashar al-Assad that brings an end to the violence and leads to a future that fulfills Syrians' aspirations for freedom and dignity," the statement said.
These meetings were a follow up to Secretary of State John Kerry's recent discussion with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Doha and Kuala Lumpur.
Additionally, the US reiterated its support for the Syrian people and a democratic Syria.
"Political transition is not only necessary for the good of the people of Syria, but an important part of the fight to defeat the extremists. The Special Envoy's visit to Moscow provided an opportunity to discuss these issues with Russian officials," the statement affirmed. (end) ak.ajs
