CAIRO, Oct 12 (KUNA) -- An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit west of Chania
on Greek Crete Island, felt by Cairo residents and many Egyptian provinces,
the Egyptian National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics said
Saturday.
Preliminary estimates recorded by Egyptian National Seismic Network noted
that the quake was considered powerful, the president of the Institute, Hatem
Oudah said.
The official added the quake took place in the Mediterranean, 80 kilometers
west of Chania City in Crete Island at 3:11 p.m. Cairo time.
The quake coincides with the 21st anniversary of the massive quake
destruction which took place on 12 October 1992.
The 1992 quake killed many along with huge material destruction. (end)
