TOKYO, April 17 (KUNA) -- Japan on Wednesday condemned a series of bombings in Iraq which killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 170 others, saying terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. "Japan has been greatly shocked and is indignant at a series of terrorist attacks in Baghdad and other cities on April 15, which caused many deaths and injuries," Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Yutaka Yokoi said in a statement. "Japan condemns these atrocious acts of terrorism that indiscriminately target innocent people," Yokoi said. The spokesman also expressed Japan's deepest condolences for those who have been killed in the attacks and their bereaved families. According to media reports, six car bombs went off in Baghdad, killing 38 people and wounding 119. Attacks also occurred in at least 4 other cities, including Hilla in central Iraq and Kirkuk in the north. A wave of bombings occurred as the country is preparing to hold provincial elections on 20 April, the first since 2010. Japan hopes that despite these despicable acts of terrorism, the Iraq government and its people will continue to tackle their domestic problems through further progress in national reconciliation and the political and democratic process. Japan will continue to support such efforts of the Iraqi government and its people," the statement added. (end) mk.asa KUNA 171133 Apr 13NNNN
