NEW DELHI, Jan 26 (KUNA) -- India is celebrating its 64th Republic Day on Saturday. A grand function was organized in New Delhi, where the country's cultural and military strength was displayed through a galaxy of colourful tableaux.
The day began with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh paying homage at the historic 'India Gate' to the soldiers who laid down their lives for the country's Independence. The Three Defence Chiefs also stood next to him on the occasion.
Thereafter, several contingents of Indian armed forces marched past the historic 8-km long road "Rajpath", connecting the President's House with India Gate. The military contingents were followed by colourful tableaux from every Indian state showcasing its art and culture.
While President Pranab Mukherjee received the salute from the military contingents, Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was the Chief Guest of the grand occasion.
On the eve of the country's Republic Day, President Mukherjee said that sponsorship of terrorism through non-state actors was a matter of deep concern. He also said that India is ready to offer a hand of friendship with Pakistan, but the latter should not take the former for granted.
In his customary Address to the Nation, he said that in the recent past, serious atrocities on the Indian troops at Indo-Pak border (Line of Control) have been seen. He was referring to the recent beheading of an Indian soldier by Pakistan Army soldiers earlier this month.
"Neighbours may have disagreements; tension can be a subtext of frontiers. But sponsorship of terrorism through non-state actors is a matter of deep concern to the entire nation," added the Indian President. (end) py.gta KUNA 261254 Jan 13NNNN
