AMMAN, Jan 25 (KUNA) -- Jordanian King Abdullah II received here on Wednesday visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the efforts aiming to re-launch the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
The King briefed the Palestinian leader on the results of his visit to the United States last week as well as his talks with US President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senate committee leaders, according to a Royal Court press release.
The talks between King Abdullah II and President Abbas dealt also with the outcome of the recent Amman meetings between Palestinian and Israeli negotiators aimed to revive the peace process.
The King promised to continue the efforts to create the proper conditions for addressing the final status issues in order to reach the ultimate goal of establishing an independent viable Palestinian state within the borders of pre-June, 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital, the statement said.
On his part, the Palestinian leader highly appreciated King Abdullah II's mediation efforts including his (the King's) talks with the US leaders where he conveyed the high-principled Arab position on the peace process.
Regarding the recent Palestinian-Israeli meetings, President Abbas said the meetings were exploratory for the peace talks.
He condemned the illegitimate Israeli practices in the occupied Palestinian territories including the settlement constructions which constitute "a huge impediment to peace." (end) ngs.gb KUNA 252338 Jan 12NNNN
