Trump says "tremendous progress" being made with North Korea

WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that "tremendous progress" is being made with respect to North Korea.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Marine One, Trump noted "we had very good news from North Korea, South Korea. They met, and we had some great responses." He added "I got a tremendous letter from Kim Jong-un - it was delivered three days ago. We're making tremendous progress with respect to North Korea." He said that prior to becoming president, "it looked like we were going to war with North Korea, and now we have a lot of progress. We've gotten our prisoners back. We're getting our remains back. They continue to come in. A lot of tremendous things.
"But very importantly, no missile testing, no nuclear testing. Now they want to go and put a bid in for the Olympics - we have a lot of very good things going," he remarked.
He added that "at least on a personal basis, they're very good. It's very much calmed down." Earlier, Trump said in a tweet that "Kim Jong Un has agreed to allow Nuclear inspections, subject to final negotiations, and to permanently dismantle a test site and launch pad in the presence of international experts." He added "in the meantime there will be no Rocket or Nuclear testing. Hero remains to continue being returned home to the United States. Also, North and South Korea will file a joint bid to host the 2032 Olympics. Very exciting." North Korea agreed earlier today to take additional steps toward making the Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons, in a gesture to restart its denuclearization talks with the US.
The agreement came in a summit between its leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held in Pyongyang. "The South and the North also discussed denuclearization steps for the first time," Moon was quoted as saying at a joint press conference in the North Korean capital.
"The North has agreed to permanently shut down its Dongchang-ri missile engine testing facility and missile launch pad under the participation of experts from related countries," the South Korean president said in the press conference broadcast live in Seoul.
Kim said he and Moon agreed to remove all nuclear weapons and threats from the Korean Peninsula. (end) si.bs
