EP President Tajani condemns "ethnic cleansing" in Syria

BRUSSELS, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani denounced Wednesday the killing of innocent people in Syria and appealed for an immediate ceasefire in the war-torn country.
"No interest nor cause can justify the barbaric ethnic cleansing and killing of innocent people," he said in a press statement following his meeting with the Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic community of Aleppo, Jean-Clأ©ment Jeanbart.
"In this regard, I would like to condemn, in the strongest terms, the blackmail, harassment and sexual exploitation that have taken place in connection with the distribution of humanitarian aid in Syria. Humanity is in perdition in Syria," he said.
"On behalf of the European Parliament, I would like to make an appeal for the speedy implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolution adopted on 24 February," Tajani added.
He stressed that humanitarian corridors are not enough and there is an urgent need for a genuine and lasting ceasefire to protect civilians, evacuate the wounded and to ensure that aid can be distributed." Tajani pointed out that the second conference on Syria will be held in Brussels on April 24-25, saying it must lead to political and humanitarian solutions. (end) nk.nam
