UN celebrates int'l day for eliminating violence against women

New York, Nov 23 (Kuna) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed late Wednesday the right of every woman and girl to live a life free from violence.
This came during an event hosted by the United Nations permanent headquarters to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which coincides on the 25th of this month and will be held this year under the title "Without accepting anyone".
"Attacks against women are common in both developing and developed countries, despite attempts to cover them, it is a daily reality for many women and girls around the world", Guterres added.
He pointed to the approach he unveiled early in the year to address acts of sexual abuse and exploitation committed by individuals working under the banner of the United Nations.
Guterres expressed his determination to prevent and eliminate such crimes, calling on the international community to strengthen its joint action to eliminate violence against women forever.
He assured that the UN committed to face these violations in all its forms through financing UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The (UN Trust Fund) awards grants to initiatives that demonstrate that violence against women and girls can be systematically addressed reduced and, with persistence, eliminated.
The UN Trust Fund has awarded USD 129 million to 463 initiatives in 139 countries and territories since its creation in 1996.
Its current portfolio comprises 106 grants total USD 54 million in 77 countries and territories. (end) asf.nhq
