Trump wishes Germany successful elections during call with Merkel

WASHINGTON, Sept 23 (KUNA) -- U.S. President Donald Trump called Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany to wish her country a successful election on September 24, when Germans go to the polls, the White House announced Friday.
The White House said in a statement that Trump underscored the steadfast bond between the United States and Germany, according to polls.
Merkel's Christian Democratic Union Party (CDU) is expected to win 36 percent of the votes in the Sunday ballots when Germans cast their votes to form the 19th German parliament.
The new parliament (Bundestag) will have to elect a Chancellor with an absolute majority of its members, who will in turn form a new government.
If the CDU wins, Markel will break the record of the longest serving chancellor after Helmet Kohl, who served 6 years in office. (end) si.tg
