Russia opposes change to Iran's nuclear deal

NEW YORK, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday rejected any changes to the nuclear agreement with Iran, which was concluded between Tehran and the P5+1 group in 2015.
"Reopening the agreement is not wanted by us or any other country," Lavrov told a news conference at the UN in New York.
He said any changes to the agreement would send a wrong message to North Korea, that any possible deal regarding Pyongyang's nuclear missile program would be exposed to change anytime.
"North Korea will say: why should we negotiate with you, if you're unable to do so?" Lavrov said.
Lavrov noted that Russia supported any attempt to solve the standoff with North Korea diplomatically in order to prevent any confrontations in the Korean peninsula.
On Palestine, he said that Russia was worried about the stalemate of the peace process in the Middle East.
This stalemate, which prevented a settlement, "has been used by extremists to recruit youth," he said.
"The international community is unjust to a nation that is suffering the oldest conflict," he said in reference to Palestine.
On Syria, Lavrov rejected any attempt to divide the country because it would have repercussions in the Middle East, while the political process should be pursued in line with the relevant international resolutions. (end) bs.asf
