Kuwait-Turk Bank donates USD 285,000 for Rohingya

ISTANBUL, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- Kuwait-Turk Bank has donated one million lira (USD 285,000) to the Turkish Red Crescent Society to relieve Muslim Rohingya who have been fleeing violence in their country Myanmar.
The bank general manager, Ufuk Oyan, said in a statement during a ceremony for handing over the donation cheque that the bank management decided to help the Rohingya in response to appeals by clients and staff.
He hoped that the move would stimulate other establishments to contribute to aiding those Muslims.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya, targeted with persecution and random violence, have been fleeing Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Karam Kink, the Turkish Red Crescent General Director, said more than 500,000 Muslims have recently reached Bangladesh.
Establishing 24,000 makeshift residential units for housing 100,000 persons warrant USD 50 million, he said, citing an example how costly such relief aid for this large number of refugees.
The society will dispatch a delegation to the frontier regions in Bangladesh where the Rohingya have been settling recently before proceeding to donor countries namely Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait.
The Turkish-Kuwaiti bank, established in 1989, is the third Islamic bank in Turkey. (end) to.rk
