UNSC forms team to probe IS war crimes in Iraq

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- The UN Security Council (UNSC) agreed on Thursday to form a team to investigate the so-called Islamic State (IS)'s war crimes and crimes against humanity in Iraq.
All 15 members of the UNSC approved resolution 2379, authorizing establishment of a team supporting Iraq's efforts to collect evidence used to hold IS accountable for the crimes committed in the country.
The team, consisting of international and Iraqi experts, will have a two-year mandate and will work in full respect of Iraq's sovereignty and jurisdiction over committed in Iraqi territory.
The IS militants have carried out atrocities against the Iraqi people, forcing many civilians to flee their homes because they fear they would be killed by the militants.
The IS also occupied large swathes of lands in Iraq before the government forces and international coalition supporting them began military operations to liberate these areas.
Iraq's northern city of Mosul was liberated, followed by Tal Afar. Iraqi forces have been in full gear to liberate the remaining areas controlled by IS. (end) bs.asf
