US Pres. unveils new sanctions on N. Korea

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump announced Thursday new sanctions against North Korea in retaliation against Pyongyang nuclear missile program.
Trump, in New York for the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly and meetings with world leaders, signed an executive order that would target financial institutions facilitating trade with North Korea.
Speaking to reporters after signing the order, Trump said that the North Korean nuclear weapons development was posing a great threat to peace and security of the world.
He said the new sanctions would cut sources of revenues that would halt North Korea's efforts to the development of "the deadliest weapons known to human kind." It would target individuals and entities that conduct services, trade in goods or technology with North Korea, he added.
Trump, who thanked China for ordering its banks to curb transactions with North Korea, noted that the new executive order would target new industries like textile and fishing, as well as disrupting North Korea's shipping and trade networks.
The President said that foreign banks would have a choice to "do business with the US or facilitate trade with the lawless North Korean regime." The order, he said, aimed at a pushing for the complete denuclearization of North Korea, calling on "those responsible nations to enforce and implement UN sanctions and impose their own measures." The UN Security Council imposed fresh sanctions against North Korea last week in the wake of Pyongyang's nuclear missile test. (pickup previous) bs.asf
