Iran warns against nuclear deal violation

NEW YORK, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that Tehran would respond "decisively and resolutely" to any party violating the nuclear agreement, reacting to US President Donald Trump who said the deal was an "embarrassment to the US." Addressing the UN General Assembly session in New York, Rouhani warned against the violation of the 2015 nuclear agreement and said the deal belonged to the international community "not only one or two countries." He said the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 Group was the outcome of intensive multilateral negotiations, and was endorsed by a UN Security Council resolution 2231.
The agreement downgraded Iran's nuclear program in return of easing of economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
Trump has been critical of the agreement and yesterday he told the UNGA that the deal was an "embarrassment to the US." But Rouhani warned that Iran would respond "decisively and resolutely" to any country violating the agreement, and cautioned the Trump Administration against failing to honor its commitments.
"We did not receive or cheat anyone. We never sought to seek nuclear deterrence," he said.
Rouhani noted that Iran concluded cooperation agreements with advanced countries following the agreement.
The Iranian President, meanwhile, said his country's missile program was solely for defense purposes, and called for enhancing cooperation with neighboring countries. (end) bs.asf
