Belgium calls for concrete measures to protect Rohingya

BRUSSELS, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- Belgium called on Wednesday for concrete and swift measures to guarantee the protection of the Muslim Rohingya community in Myanmar.
"The first urgency is for tensions in Rakhine State to abate and to allow unlimited access for humanitarian aid. But it is also important to be able to take long-term measures in order to guarantee decent living conditions to the Rohingya population within the framework of the Burmese nation," said Belgian foreign minister Didier Reynders in a statement.
"Only these will make peaceful coexistence among different ethnicities in this State of Myanmar possible," he said.
Reynders said he would continue to express his great worry over the Rohingya's situation in his future bilateral contacts with the Myanmar authorities. (end) nk.gta
