EU announces additional funding to UNICEF for Syrian refugee children

BRUSSELS, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) announced Wednesday an additional 90 million euro (USD 108 million) in support to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to provide services and assistance to Syrian refugee in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.
The additional EU funding was signed by EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn and UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake.
This latest contribution brings the total EU funding for UNICEF's work on the Syria crisis response to nearly 200 million euro (USD 240 million), said a European Commission press release.
"I cannot stress enough the importance of promoting and providing access to quality education for children and young people in all countries affected by the Syrian crisis," commented Hahn.
With the Syrian conflict now in its seventh year, around 2 million children from Syria live as refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, adding pressure on already stretched host communities and their administrations, he noted. (end) nk.gta
