UN investigators urge unimpeded entry into Myanmar

GENEVA, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- UN investigators should be granted immediate access to Myanmar in order to survey the current conditions there, the head of a fact-finding mission on the Southeast Asian nation said Tuesday.
The remarks by the President of the UN's fact-finding mission on Myanmar Marzuki Darusman came during the 36th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which runs until September 29.
As he submitted the mission's report, he highlighted that thousands of refugees and victims deserve an explanation over who was behind the crisis in Myanmar.
Darusman added that if the UN mission is allowed entry into the country, it would help the government in Myanmar to take measures to solve this deep-rooted crisis. The UN official pointed out that preliminary findings point to human rights violations taking place in Myanmar's Rakhine state, which has the UN body highly concerned.
Meanwhile, the UNHRC's resolution to set up the fact-finding mission mandated Darusman's team to examine possible human rights violations by security forces and abuses in Myanmar.
The UNHRC session holds extensive studies of a plethora of human rights issues. (end) ta.nam
