Curfew in Kirkuk imposed due to clashes ahead of Kurdish independence vote

IRBIL, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- Authorities in Kirkuk imposed a curfew on Tuesday in fears of further violence after a recent deadly shooting in the northern Iraqi city, which occurred ahead of Kurdistan's September 25 independence referendum.
All of the city's exits have been closed off and a curfew imposed until further notice, a police spokesperson said in a statement.
The move comes after a security guard for a political party belonging to the Iraqi Turkmen community on Monday fired shots at people celebrating the upcoming vote, killing one person and injuring another three.
Kirkuk and several other cities that are disputed with the central Baghdad government are currently under the control of Kurdish Pershmerga forces after the Iraqi army lost the areas to Islamic State militants in 2014.
The city, located in the disputed oil-rich province of the same name, is inhabited by a mixture of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen and Christians. (end) sbr.sd
