ANKARA, Sept 14 (KUNA) -- The Turkish Foreign Ministry said Thursday that there would be a "price" if Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region goes ahead with a planned independence referendum.
The Ministry, in a statement quoted by Anadolu News Agency, expressed its support for Iraqi parliament decision to oppose the independence poll and called on the government in Baghdad to negotiate with the Irbil-based Kurdistan regional government.
Turkey wants Baghdad and Irbil to resolve the dispute through dialogue and conduct relations based on the "constitution and justice," the statement added.
The Ministry stressed the Kurdistan region needs to consider that "there will absolutely be a price" for insisting on holding a referendum despite all the friendly suggestions, the Ministry said.
For his part, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said, "the referendum would create instability, crisis, and chaos, adding that other security risks and many problems which cannot be predicted today will emerge.
Iraq's Kurdistan region President Masoud Barzani announced on June 7 for independence referendum from Iraq will be held on September 25.
On Tuesday, the Iraq's Council of Representatives voted to reject Kurdistan region's planned independence referendum. (end)
