Catalan officials confirm US warning of Barcelona attack

MADRID, Aug 31 (KUNA) -- Regional authorities in Catalonia said on Thursday that US anti-terrorism officials warned them last May of an imminent attack on tourist destinations, but the sources were deemed not credible enough.
In a press conference, Catalan Interior Minister Joaquim Forn refused to name the American sources, denying that the warning came from the CIA.
He revealed that local police received a warning on May 25, indicating that the so-called Islamic State (IS) were planning an attack in the autonomous Spanish community's capital of Barcelona.
Forn said that the warning was examined by Spanish officials who felt that it was not very credible and did not warrant any action.
On August 17, a van attack in the bustling Las Ramblas promenade and a car rampage in nearby Cambrils left 16 people dead and more than 120 others wounded. (end) hnd.nam
