US, Japan counterpart discuss North Korea, defense cooperation - Pentagon

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (KUNA) -- Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met Thursday with Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera on the sidelines of the US-Japan Security Consultative Committee to reaffirm the strength of the US-Japan Alliance, the Pentagon announced.
During the meeting, Mattis emphasized that the US "remains steadfast in its ironclad commitment to defend Japan in the face of common threats, such as those posed by North Korea," the announcement said.
They also discussed the accelerating implementation of the 2015 Revised Guidelines for Bilateral Defense Cooperation and enhancing Japan's defense capabilities, it said. (end) rm.gta
