Dozens of Palestinians wounded amid clashes with Israeli police

RAMALLAH, July 20 (KUNA) -- Nearly 78 Palestinians were wounded in clashes with Israeli police in eastern Jerusalem, Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported Thursday.
Around 36 of the wounded Palestinians were transported to the Old City's hospitals, including two in a very critical condition, while the other 42 were given first aid treatment at the incident's site, PRCS said in a statement.
A violent confrontation erupted earlier between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli police at Bab Al-Asbat gate of Al-Aqsa mosque, during which Israeli forces used rubber bullets, sound, and tear gas bombs to fend off the Palestinians.
The protesters were objecting Israel's decision to place metal detectors at the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque after reopening the Muslim holy site to worshippers following a one-day shutdown. (end) nq.ma
