More than 50,000 suspects remanded in custody since failed 2016 coup - Turkish justice ministry

ANKARA, July 13 (KUNA) -- Since the foiled July 15, 2016 coup by the Ankara-branded 'Fetullah Terrorist Organization' (FETO), more than 50,000 suspects have been remanded in custody, Turkey's Justice Ministry announced on Thursday.
The exact number of those remanded is 50,510, said a ministry statement, according to Anadolu Agency The number includes 169 generals, 8,815 police officers, 7,098 soldiers with the rank of colonel or lower, 24 governors, 73 deputy governors, and 2,431 members of the judiciary.
Out of 2,431 jurists remanded, 2,280 were serving in judicial or administrative courts as judges or prosecutors, 105 served on the Supreme Court, 41 served on the Council of State, two served on the Constitutional Court, and three served on the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors.
A total of 48,439 people were released on judicial control, including 3,046 soldiers, 5,024 police officers, nine governors, 27 deputy governors, and three Supreme Court judges, the ministry statement noted.
To date, a total of 169,013 suspects have been investigated or prosecuted as part of investigations of the coup.
Of that number, 43,404 people were later released.
FETO, led by its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen alledgedly orchestrated the failed coup of July 15, which left 250 people killed and nearly 2,200 injured.
Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary. (end) rs.hb
