US, Iraq stress importance of IS fight in region

BAGHDAD, June 24 (KUNA) -- The US and Iraq on Saturday underlined the importance of keeping the region conflict-free and focusing on the global fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.
The comments were made in a telephone conversation between Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, according to Al-Abadi's press office.
For his part, Tillerson went on to commend Iraq's successes in the battle to free Mosul from IS and its positions on regional conflicts.
He also highlighted Baghdad's important role in the region's stability.
On other topics, Tillerson reiterated that the US does not support Kurdistan's planned referendum to secede from Iraq. (end) sd
