Swedish "The Square" movie wins Palme d'Or top prize

PARIS, May 28 (KUNA) -- The Swedish movie "The Square" snatched on Sunday the Palme d'Or top prize at the Cannes film festival.
The runner-up Grand Prix went to the moving French drama "120 Beats Per Minute" about the radical activists who helped shame the world into action on AIDS.
German Diane Kruger declared best actress for her first film role in her native German as a devastated mother who has lost her husband and son in a neo-Nazi terror attack, in Fatih Akin's "In the Fade." Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix won best actor in "You Were Never Really Here" and Sofia Coppola became only the second woman in history to win best director for her thriller "The Beguiled" with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.
This year's Cannes' jury headed by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar handed out the prizes at a gala ceremony on Sunday evening in the Mediterranean resort town.
The the Palme d'Or top prize was encrusted with 167 diamonds to mark the festival's 70th anniversary. (end) mjz.ibi
