Today in Kuwait's history

KUWAIT, May 14 (KUNA) -- 1921 -- Kuwait's ruler, His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, called on businessmen to donate for establishing Al-Ahmadiya school, assigning Sheikh Yousef Bin Essa Al-Qinaei as its manager.
1961 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued Law 16/1961 banning unlicensed weapons.
1963 -- Kuwait's membership in the United Nations was accepted after the Security Council reviewed its application, presented on November 30, 1961. Kuwait became member number 111 at the UN. Later, Kuwait began joining UN agencies.
1964 -- The Public Authority of Administering Shuaiba Industrial Zone was established for utilizing oil and natural gas.
1979 -- Draft law number 24 was issued stipulating establishment of cooperative societies.
1996 -- In an unprecedented step in the media world, two newspapers carrying the same name, "Al-Rai Al-Aam" were published in Kuwait on the same day. The first was owned by Abdulaziz Al-Musaeed and the other by Al-Jazeera publishing and media company, run by Jassem Boudai. The Ministry of Information took both parties to court and the publishing rights were given to Boudai.
1996 -- The National Assembly agreed to a draft a law committing the government to establish at least one mobile telephone company, with a majority of 34 votes with one MP abstaining and the government voting against.
2005 -- His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah inaugurated Kuwait's First Economic Forum, organized by Bayan Investment company.
2006 -- Wataniya Airlines was established with capital of KD 50 million.
2007 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued Decree 129/2007, approving an international agreement for combating usage of narcotics among athletes.
2009 -- Central Bank of Kuwait lowered the interest rate from 3.5 percent to three percent.
2010 -- Kuwait's Ambassador to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi was named Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York.
2012 -- Ministry of Public Works won the 2012 Meid Company award for project quality.
2012 -- Kuwaiti fencing players won three gold medals in the West Asia Tournament held in Kuwait.
2014 -- The National Assembly approved two bills re-endorsing father's right to housing and establishing the Authority for Roads and Land Transport.
2014 -- The Kuwaiti media leader -- turned philanthropist -- and Chairman of Kuwait Red Crescent Society, Barjas Humoud Al-Barjas, passed away. (end) rk
