Today in Kuwait's history

KUWAIT, May 3 (KUNA) -- 1814 -- Second Kuwaiti ruler, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah I, passes away after ruling for some 39 years, 1776-1814. His rule saw the construction of Kuwait Wall and the first maritime battle in the nation's history.
1967 -- Kuwaiti government awards Kuwaiti-Spanish Petroleum Company oil concessions to explore drill and produce oil for 35 years in an area of 1,900 square kilometers.
1985 -- The Parliament discusses grilling filed by MPs Mubarak Al-Duwailah, Ahmad Al-Rubei, and Hamad Al-Jouaan against then minister of justice and of legal and administrative affairs Sheikh Salman Duaij Al-Sabah over awarding small-investor support bonds to the minister's son. The motion was retracted upon the minister's resignation.
1995 -- Kuwait announces exchanging ambassadorial representation with Vietnam.
1995 -- Grilling motion by MP Mufarrej Al-Mutairi against Minister of Education Ahmad Al-Rubei was discussed over violations relating to Kuwait University. The minister passed a vote of confidence.
1999 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issues law 2/1999 regulating transparency concerning shareholders with five percent and over stake in a company.
1999 -- Islamic Development Bank announces establishment of International Leasing and Investment Company with USD-50-million capital, which is to operate according to Islamic Shariah.
2000 -- Standard and Poor's Rating Agency awards Kuwait an 'A' credit rating on long-term foreign currency issues, and advanced rating in many areas, reflecting the strength of Kuwaiti economy.
2000 -- Kuwaiti Criminal Court upheld the death sentence issued against Alaa Hussein, the head of the so-called Kuwait Interim Government, announced by the Saddam regime during the 1990 occupation of the state. He was convicted of grand treason.
2003 -- Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education Dr. Musaad Al-Haroun issues a law to establish the Permanent Council of Trustees for Higher Institutes, with the aim of coordinating and setting policies of teaching and education in those institutes.
2005 -- The State of Kuwait and Cyprus declare diplomatic relations on ambassadorial level.
2010 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah decorates Italian President with the Mubarak Al-Kabir medal during his visit to Rome.
2012 -- Ministry of Interior released 1,890 prisoners upon an Amiri pardon on occasion of national celebrations. (end) mb
