Turkish boat sinks in Greek waters, killing 15 refugees

ANKARA, April 24 (KUNA) -- Fifteen persons died after a boat carrying more than 25 refugees from Turkey to Lesbos sank in the Aegean Sea, Greek authorities announced on Monday.
Anadolu Agency (AA) quoted a statement by the Greek Maritime Ministry saying that a boat carrying migrants and refugees sank after entering the Greek waters.
Frontex, the EU's border security agency, and the Greek authorities have recovered eight bodies, including a child, while they rescued two women, one of them pregnant, and transported them to the island, while the Turkish coast guard has recovered seven more bodies, the statement added.
The search and rescue operation is ongoing, searching for survivors in cooperation with Frontex agency, the statement noted.
According to recent Greek statistics, more than 23,000 migrants and refugees reached islands in the Aegean Sea. (end) rs.mys
