US, Chinese presidents discuss ties, N. Korea

TOKYO, April 24 (KUNA) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump on Monday discussed bilateral ties and the situation on the Korean Peninsula on phone, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.
In their telephone conversation, Xi and Trump pledged close contact through various means to promptly exchange views on major issues of common concern, the report said.
"China strongly opposes actions that violate resolutions of the UN Security Council," Xi was quoted as telling Trump, adding China hopes that the parties concerned will exercise restraint and avoid actions that aggravate tensions on the Peninsula. "If the parties shoulder their due responsibilities and meet each other halfway, they can solve the nuclear issue of North Korea and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula," the Chinese leader said. Xinhua didn't mention what Trump said. (end) mk.tg
