Int'l press body condemns death sentence against Yemeni journalist by Houthis

BRUSSELS, April 13 (KUNA) -- The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned Thursday the death sentence passed yesterday by the Houthi Security Court against a veteran Yemeni journalist.
Reporter and former professor Yahya Abdulraqeeb Al-Jubeihi, 61, was sentenced to death on charges of spying, said IFJ in a statement.
آ¨We are outraged by this ruling against a senior journalist and we warn those who are overseeing this show trial against harming him,آ¨ said IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger in a statement. آ¨Otherwise the IFJ, its unions around the globe and international partners will make sure that they face justice for their crime," he added, The IFJ said that the Houthi rebels have controlled all government and media institutions in Sanaa since they overran the capital in September 2014 and are accused of undermining press freedom.
Another 18 journalists also remain detained by the Houthis under brutal conditions and fear a similar fate, it noted.
The Brussels-based IFJ represents around 600,000 journalists across 140 countries. (end) nk.hb
