Leaders of 7 southern European states discuss Brexit challenges

MADRID, April 10 (KUNA) -- leaders of seven southern European countries will discuss the future of the European Union (EU) after the British withdrawal (Brexit) and ways to jointly address the challenges posed by it as a crucial moment in the history of the region.
This meeting comes within the framework of the third summit of the leaders and heads of government of the countries of the Southern European Union, which is the continuation of the (Athens Summit) held on the ninth of last September and the (Lisbon Summit) held last January 28.
The leaders of France, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Cyprus, Greece and France are trying to reach a fair and balanced agreement on Britain's exit and pave the way for a common position on European integration.
The summit comes just days after the Rome summit on March 25 marking the 60th anniversary of the signing of the founding treaty in Rome and laying the foundation stone for a new European project.
It also comes two weeks after the United Kingdom's intention to withdraw from the EU last March 29 and before the extraordinary meeting of the European Council scheduled for April 29 in Brussels without Britain to adopt the basic principles for negotiations with it.
The leaders will adopt a joint declaration at the end of the summit on the future of the European Union and the Brexit. It is expected to cover other related issues including migration, counter-terrorism, economic and social policies, joint security, defense policy and the role of the Union for the Mediterranean.(end).
