Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation taks part in the IPU conference
KUWAIT, April 1 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has expressed support for a proposed resolution forwarded by the Palestinian delegation to the 136th Inter-Parliamentary Union's conference denouncing a bill by the Israeli Knesset that legalizes settlements in the West Bank.
The Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation, taking part in the IPU conference, has expressed backing for the Palestinian-presented draft resolution, during sideline coordination meetings of the Gulf and Islamic groups, said MP Rakan Al-Nisf, head of the Kuwaiti Parliamentary Caucus, taking part in the event.
The topic, presented by the Palestinian delegation, is related to the question of Israeli Knesset's violation of the relevant UN resolutions, namely those that legalize settlements' construction, he said following the two groups' meetings.
Israel's parliament has recently passed a legislation, aimed at legalizing about 3,000 housing units built on private Palestinian land in the West Bank.
MP Al-Nisf added said there was consensus during the meetings on nominating Dr. Ali Abdulal, Egypt's speaker, as representative of the Arab group in the IPU executive committee, adding that Kuwait's MP Omar Al-Tabtabaei was also nominated as member in the Forum of Parliamentary Youth.
For his part, Kuwait's MP Dr. Odah Al-Ruwaiee said the Palestinian-proposed urgent topic stipulates explicit breach on part of the Israeli Knesset for legalizing settlements, thus violating relevant UN resolutions.
There is unanimous support in the two groups, as well as the African delegation, for the proposed Palestinian resolution, which will be voted upon, he added.
Sessions of the IPU convention kicked off earlier today in Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka. The conference is scheduled to proceed till April 5th.
The convention addresses a host of topics such as equality among members of the human kind and welfare for all nations of the globe.
The Kuwaiti lawmakers are participating in meetings of the IPU permanent and committees and sub-committees, tackling issues such as non-intervention in States' domestic affairs, bolstering global cooperation for realizing sustainable development and parliaments' role in enhancing juveniles' well-being.
The delegation includes the caucus secretary, Dr. Odah Al-Ruwaiee, the treasurer MP Dr. Walid Al-Tabtabaei, members of the executive committee MPs Omar Al-Tabtabaei and Yousef Al-Fadhalah as well as the National Assembly Secretary General, Allam Al-Kanderi. (end) fn.rk
