GCC ministerial council approves Secretary General's envoy for Yemen

RIYADH, March 30 (KUNA) -- The GCC Ministerial Council meeting approved Saudi Arabia's nominee Madkhal Al-Hazali to serve as GCC Secretary General's envoy for Yemen, GCC chief Abdul-Latif Al Zayani said Thursday.
Speaking at a news conference following the 142nd session of the Gulf Ministerial Council, Al-Zayani said his envoy for Yemen faces a big dossier regarding the resumption of peaceful negotiations to reach a solution, and humanitarian situations there.
He referred to the decision of GCC leaders proposed by Saudi King to hold an international conference to reconstruct Yemen and rehabilitate its economy to be part of GCC.
He noted that the council was briefed on GCC chief's report on humanitarian, security and political developments in Yemen, and efforts by UN Secretary General's envoy to resume political negotiations.
Al Zayani stressed GCC countries' keenness on enhancing the Gulf integration and cooperation march in all fields so as to maintain their stability and security.
The ministers were told about some topics on promoting strategic partnerships and cooperation with some other countries The council reviewed action to implement the vison of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz on boosting the joint Gulf action, he noted.
They also were briefed on reports of GCC Secretariat on the resolutions that have been implemented so far, Al Zayani indicated.
He said that the council discussed developments and ongoing conflicts in the region, confirming GCC continued efforts with the international community to end the deadly conflicts and restore stability to the entire region.
For his part, Bahrain's Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said the council affirmed the GCC firm decisions and stances regarding Yemen.
It welcomed the issuance of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2342 which emphasizes the basic national, international and regional references to find a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.
"Our aim in Yemen is to reach a solution by Yemeni people to be in favor of that Arab nation," he said.
He pointed out that Houthis are part of the Yemeni people; he however indicated that the problem is that they are supported by Iran.
He called on Iran not to interfere into Yemen's affairs, saying, "We are committed to the Gulf initiative and all UN resolutions on Yemen." Meanwhile, the press statement by council lauded the meeting of the Quartet with the participation of the Sultanate of Oman on Yemen held in Bonn on 16, February, 2017.
The statement asked the Houthis and the group of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh to abide by peace and to resume the UN-brokered consultations in line with the Gulf Initiative, its executive mechanism, outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue conference, Security Council resolution no. 2216 and the framework by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General which includes security and political measures to end the crisis.
