The Arab world needs to overcome the dark period it is going through as a result of various challenges that have destabilized and rocked the region's security and peace, said His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in a speech Wednesday.
Speaking to Arab leaders and international participants at the 28th Regular Arab Summit, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah thanked the Jordanian Monarchy headed by King Abdullah II and the Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abulgheit for organizing the grand Arab event aimed at bolstering inter-Arab cooperation on all possible levels.
His Highness the Amir took the chance also to thank Mauritania for hosting the presidency of the summit, saying that the Arab state contributed to bolstering Arab cooperation.
In his speech, His Highness Sheikh Sabah stressed that the region was facing grave challenges and dangers that required solidarity, unity, and joint efforts among Arab countries.
The Arab Summit should and must come up with mechanisms and solutions to address the numerous challenges facing the region, said His Highness Sheikh Sabah.
He touched on the issue of inner conflicts in the Arab World, stressing that it was one of the most crippling problems that should be addressed collectively by the participating leaders.
He went on saying that disagreements and conflicts among Arab brothers should be set aside for leaders to achieve the aspiration of their people.
The world is full of agony and mayhem due to wars, natural disasters, political conflicts, and humanitarian crises which required a strong regional and international effort to end the suffering globally, said His Highness Sheikh Sabah.
He indicated that the world's inaction towards the crisis in Syria would not lead to fruitful results for the Syrian people.
The international community needs a strong resolve to bring upon a political resolution to the crisis, said the Kuwaiti leader who took the chance to laud efforts by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Special Envoy to Syria Steffan De Mistura, as well as former leader of the UN Ban Ki-Moon for their efforts in this regard.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah thanked countries hosting the Syrian refugees - namely Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, and Turkey - for their outstanding humanitarian efforts, affirming that they had made a difference on the ground.
The Kuwaiti leader touched on the Yemeni issue, saying that his country was deeply saddened by the situation in the fellow Arab country.
His Highness the Amir called on Yemenis to heed calls by the international community and the Arab world to put an end to the crisis in Yemen.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah also touched on the situations in Iraq, Libya, and Somalia, saying that the plight, affecting people in the respective Arab countries required a truthful effort by Arabs to bring security and stability to these regions.
On the Libyan situation, His Highness the Amir asked warring parties to listen for calls of unity and national solidarity echoed by the international community and the world, affirming that these calls will ensure the future of Libya as a nation. The Arab-Israeli conflict and the Middle East peace process were also mentioned by His Highness the Amir in his speech.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah blamed Israel for halting efforts for attaining sustainable peace in the region.
The UNSC must reinforce its authority over Israel, carrying out serious measures to implement resolution 2334 concerning the illegitimacy of Israeli settlements built on Palestinian soil, said His Highness the Amir. His Highness the Amir touched on Arab relations with Iran, saying that ties with Tehran were based on mutual respect and dialogue, which ensured the rights and dignity of both sides.
His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah concluded his speech with calls for international cooperation and coordination to defeat terrorism in all of its forms, citing the Iraqi government's successful cooperation with regional and international partners to triumph over terror in Iraq. (end) gta
